Voice disorders

Hoarseness, vocal fatigue, and breathy quality are common symptoms of a voice problem (aka dysphonia). The reasons for these symptoms are variable. I work in conjunction with laryngologists (medical doctor who specialize in voice problems) to evaluate and treat people with voice problems.

Some of the voice problems we see:

Vocal fold nodules "vocal nodes"

Laryngitis

Vocal fold polyp

Vocal fold cyst

Vocal fold hemorrhage

Vocal fold scar

Vocal granuloma

Vocal fold cancer

Vocal fold paralysis

Muscle tension dysphonia

Vocal tremor

Spasmodic dysphonia

Vocal cord dysfunction (paradoxical vocal fold motion)

Chronic refractory cough

Irritable larynx syndrome

Presbylaryngis (aging voice)

Gender diverse Voice modification

It is my honor to work with transgender men and transgender women as well as non-binary persons who feel their voice does not match their gender.

Voice modification explores:

  1. Pitch
  2. Resonance
  3. Intonation
  4. Articulation
  5. Rate of speech
  6. Loudness
  7. Non-verbal communication
  8. Vocal hygiene

Performance and professional voice

I consider myself privileged to take care of professional voice users. This requires equal parts art and science. My background as a singer allows me to truly understand and empathize with my patients. Preventative education is of high importance to me. My colleagues and I can frequently be found educating high risk voice users on how to maintain a healthy voice.
